Art and Queer Theory - Mickalane Thomas on Manet

How can queer artists ‘queer’ the canon of art history?

This workshop, led by art historian Dr Tilly Scantlebury, will explore gender and sexuality in the practice of Mickalene Thomas, whose multi-media large scale paintings rethink traditional art historical representation. Through close visual analysis, we will uncover the ways in which Thomas repurposes Manet’s canonical works, Olympia and Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe, to provide visibility and representation from a black, feminist and queer perspective.

All sessions are run online via MS Teams.
