Van Gogh -Exploring Self

What is a self-portrait? How do artists reveal their identity through self-portraiture?

Join art historian Fran Herrick and artist Alex Blum to define what we mean by a ‘self-portrait’ through lively group discussion, art history research and practical drawing activities.

One of the most famous works in The Courtauld’s collection is Vincent van Gogh’s self-portrait, Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear (1889). The myth of the Van Gogh is linked as much to his extraordinary life as it is to his paintings. This workshop will allow both aspects to be explored.

Throughout the afternoon attendees will experiment with Vincent van Gogh’s sophisticated mark-making and create their own self-portrait.
